January 19th, 2010 · No Comments · Hand Crafted

Scented candles increase the ambience of any room. If you are a romantic kind of person, you’ll appreciate the aroma of these scented wax masterpieces. You and your guests will be intoxicated with a sense of well being. Also, the warm glow of just about any candle enhances the elegance of a room.

The warm fragrance of a scented candle will lift your spirts, even when the candle is not lit. So when you come home tired and worn out from the day, the presence of the perfumed candles tend to unwind you and make you feel uplifted.

Scented candles are great gifts for every season and all occasions; especially when they are hand crafted by yours truely.

1. Pick Your Candle Fragrance

Fragrance oil can be purchased in most craft shops. Also, you may buy it online. I suggest that you opt for fragrance oils rather the cheaper alcohol and water based fragrances. Because your wax mix is oil based, your fragrance must also be oil based. Why? As oil & water do not mix, a water based perfume tends not to mix with oil based wax.

2. Pick Your Wax

The basics of making a scented candle are more or less the same as for ordinary wax candles. Start by choosing your wax. Available in the market is a versatile range of wax starting with the naturals, beeswax, palm & soy, and progressing to paraffin or gel wax. Decide on the aromatic intensity of your candles before making a wax selection. For instance, wax with less density holds less fragrance than higher density wax.

3. The Process of Making Scented Candles

Let’s cover the method for making aromatic candles.

The first task is to melt your wax. I suggest using a double boiler. Meaning place the wax in a small pot & place that pot into a slightly larger container partially filled with tap water. Now heat the H2O. Use a thermometer to ensure the wax is not burnt. The temperature must be kept between 170 &180 degrees F.

Once the wax has melted, put a wick in the mold and remove your wax from the source of heat. Next add the fragrance oil. One ounce fragrance oil to 1 pound wax will create a 6% fragrance. Greater amounts of fragrance oil will cause the candle to burn out quicker.

Now pour the melted wax/fragrance mixture into your mold. The only task left is to let it the mold cool before removing your candle.

Congratulations on a job well done!

4. Experiment as You Go

You will develop expertise in all aspects of the candle craft when you start experimenting. By using different fragrances and colors, you will perfect the art of candle making and thoroughly enjoy the process.

It’s a great feeling to gift your loved ones with a scented homemade candle knowing that they will find the fragrance both relaxing and invigorating.
