As children we would collect the stamps that arrived on letters in our mailbox. I spent many happy hours with my stamp collection and thinking about that even now, it makes me smile. I do still have my origina stamp albums that I enjoyed producing when I was a child and some of my friends also continued the hobby. Unlike collecting stamps many other childhood hobbies get forgotten when you grow up. The responsibilities we aquire as adults means we often turn away from the things we enjoyed as children.

There aren't many other hobbies that are enjoyed from childhood through to old age. For a hobby that is both fascinating and can easily fit into any lifestyle you would search a long way to find one better than collecting stamps.

The pictures on stamps can be beautifully produced and they often include strange animals and plants from all over the world. Each different country has its own very distinctive stamps that vary year on year. Most stamps are small and using a magnifying glass you can reveal much more detail and see the artistry and skill of the designer. So stamp collecting for kids can give great lessons to the budding artist in how to compose and image and display it even when it is tiny.

Children will spend hours studying the details of stamps if you give them a small pile to sort through. People organize and catalog their collections in different ways but they need to be in some order when they are collected in stamp albums. A lot of kids enjoy trading stamps with their friends and on a rainy day they can trade and discus their stamp collections for many happy hours.

The collecting of postage stamps from around the world can be fun for children. It is also a great educational experience as your child can learn more about other countries, where they are and something about their culture. We can learn something of the country from the stamps that it issues. They will want to know about the images on the stamp and the language of any writing?

You can start your kids out with a pack or two of mixed stamps and a book in which to store them. Since this is a hobby for any age group they might still be collecting stamps in their old age. Owning stamps from around the world encourages children to learn about the places those stamps came from. Collecting postage stamps is a natural teaching tool but your kids will just be having fun collecting stamps.

A first kids don't care what stamps they collect but as they become more knowledgeable they will become more selective. Before you know it they may be seeking out rarer stamps in catalogues and adding them to their collection of stamps. You may find them getting stamp catalogs delivered in the mailbox. They will probably spend hours online, browsing favorite stamp collector sites all thanks to their enthusiasm for collecting postage stamps.

Many older people would enjoy this hobby too if they were encouraged to try it. Stamp collecting is a hobby that can be enjoyed as a child, gives relaxation as an adult and keeps the mind active in older age. All generations enjoy collecting postage stamps as it is a stimulating and rewarding hobby. If you want to start a child or young adult out on a hobby that can last a lifetime try giving them a stamp book together with a few well chosen stamps.
