Since it was established in 1900, Lionel trains have been the most prominent leader in model train production. Although the company has come very close to being dissolved over the past 20 years, today Lionel model trains are being made by Lionel LLC which is the owner of the Lionel trademark which has become synonymous with toy trains since their earliest days.
With a new outlook and a new corporate structure, Lionel is able to do well in the modern world of tomorrow while keeping that which we know and love about the Lionel model trains of yesteryear and creating high quality products with tradition and innovation that all can enjoy and appreciate. Model trains haven’t enjoyed the main stream interest they once had but they have not disappeared completely, in fact they are enjoying somewhat of a resurgence of interest. Children today have many more options when it comes to toys including electronic toys like video games that playing with a train set isn’t what it once was in terms of popularity.
As adults, many of us can reminisce about our childhood and the Lionel trains we played with. The largest wrapped big box under the Christmas tree on Christmas day in the morning, or finding a new train set up mysteriously set up triggers some great memories for many. The love for model train along with the pleasant childhood memories of them remains with many of us into adulthood. Having the resources as an adult allows many of us to fulfill our model railroad wishes building layouts that we could only dream about as children.
After experiencing it’s glory days, almost dissolving into insolvency and rising up from the brink stronger than before, Lionel reemerged into the world of model trains only to find that there are now other prominent model train companies that share the market now. MTH is one of the new upstart companies that are pushing forward the state of the art with extremely realistic perfect scale locomotives and digital sound effects. This competition is good for Lionel as they have been able meet the market need for more realism and complexity in response to other competitors. Despite what the competition may bring in the future, Lionel model trains will alway have a place in the model train collector’s world.
